Run after mature righteousness -- faith, love, peace -- joining those who are in honest and serious prayer before God. -- 2 Timothy 2:22 Central Presbyterian Church Welcomes Co-Pastor Elect Joseph Moore: On Sunday, February 7, the CPC congregation overwhelmingly agreed to extend terms of call to Joseph Moore as Co-Pastor Elect. Joseph's ministry will focus on young adults, family ministry, and administration. The Staff Team would like for all members to get to know the Moore family and presents a brief bio below. Please join us in telling Joseph and Shelley how pleased we are! Joseph, Liam, Shelley, and Micah Moore Joseph Moore was born in Columbia, Tennessee; attended high school in Toronto, Canada; and has lived in various parts of the USA. He received a BA in Communication from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where he also met his wife, Shelley. Before moving to Austin for seminary, Shelley completed a residency in emergency medicine in Tucson, Arizona, while Joseph worked as a hiking and mountain biking guide in the mountains of Southern Arizona. Joseph attended Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, receiving his Master of Divinity in 2009. He received the Charles King Preaching Award, the highest award for preaching given at the seminary. While in seminary, he was involved with a number of social justice issues dealing with workplace justice and anti-discrimination initiatives. His course work was focused in the areas of ethics, the theology of worship, and preaching. Joseph worked as a hospital chaplain at Brackenridge Hospital, learning pastoral care. He was an intern here at CPC. It was during this time at seminary that he discovered a passion, and gifts, for Christian worship and preaching. Shelley is an emergency medicine physician at St. David's Hospital. She grew up in Houston, Texas and is proud that both of her sons, Micah (3) and Liam (1), can forever say that they are Texas born. Shelley loves her work, family, and the occasional morning spent reading a good book over coffee. In addition to spending time with his family, Joseph enjoys swimming, riding his bike, coffee, reading, and the occasional 100-mile trail run. Joseph and Shelley are delighted that their boys will be able to spend some of their most formative years as a part of a dynamic, warm, and welcoming church family. In Greg McDonell we have had a solo pastor with a vision for our Church that embraces openness and inclusiveness and the demonstration of civil and loving behavior. Part of Greg's vision for the congregation and church he loves included guiding us to a co-pastor model. In Joseph we'll have another leader who has the vision to see the issues we're facing, the potential solutions and way forward. He possesses the leadership to bring us together to address our challenges and grow together. Joseph feels blessed to serve a growing downtown church in one of the most vibrant cities in America. He looks forward to the ways in which we may continually work together to transform our city into a more just, loving, and peaceful place. Joseph's hope rests in a God who promises all people faith, hope, and love. To the extent that Central continues to shine forth with the love of God, he is convinced that our best days are truly ahead of us. Adult Education at Central The Lenten season is a time for reflection, for retooling our understandings and practices of our faith experience. Two new classes are offered during the month of March: The Bible: What Is This Book? Facilitator: Margaret Harren In this course we will explore: What the Bible is (and what it is not). When, where, why, and how the Old Testament and New Testament books came to be. How the Bible has been preserved and handed down to us (canonizations and translations). How we use this knowledge to enhance our Bible study. Daily Practices of Discipleship Facilitator: Barbara Miller We will learn about and engage in a variety of spiritual practices and/or disciplines which, when practiced, bring us to a fuller understanding of God's constant presence in our lives. Also you have the opportunity to be a part of the following: The Seekers Class Facilitator: Jerry King The goal of the class is to provide an opportunity for the participants to gain an awareness of the teachings and practices of other faiths. The sessions and lively discussions hopefully result in spiritual enrichment of individual members. The Social Issues Class Facilitators: Kim Johnson, Jim Beckett Beginning February 28, Chris Kennedy will facilitate a five-week series on poverty that was inspired by material from Sojourners magazine and will pull in other sources as well. Two additional classes will begin after Easter, and plans are being made for the summer months of June and July. Share your needs and ideas for future learning opportunities with the Adult Education Team: Carol Flake, Lisa Kennedy, Kevin Estes, George Holland, Frances Knipp, Barbara Miller, Joseph Moore. Food on the First As we reflect upon our own blessings and respond as good stewards, keep in mind those for whom putting food on the table is a daily challenge. March 7 is the first Sunday of the month. Central's tradition of generosity is reflected in our provision of nonperishable items for the food pantry at Manos de Cristo. When you shop for yourself or your family, add extra items to your cart and bring them to church. Why, us, of course! Once again, CPC will be a venue for SXSW on Wednesday, March 17, through Saturday, March 20. From 7pm to the unholy hour of 1am, we will host SXSW artists in our sanctuary. Aside from showing that we are kool dudes and dudettes, we get to raise some money for CPC and some of our mission partners. Want to help? Volunteer - We need multiple greeters and concession staffers to work each night. Contact Susan Richter by e-mail (richter@haus.org) for information on where your skills can help. Can't work at night? Volunteer for the Sunday morning clean-up crew (Mar. 21) and help complete the transformation. Many hands make for light work, and make our sanctuary shine! Can't do either of these? Donate - We need cases and cases of bottled water for artists and to sell to our guests. Or - Buy a raffle ticket to win a Platinum Pass for yourself or a distant relative. Only $25 each, for a chance at a thousand-dollar prize! Its primary mission is to bring people together from various faith traditions to understand the spiritual works of each. We gather at Book People, at 6th & Lamar, from 7-8:30pm. Mar 8 - The Mystic Heart, Discovering A Universal Spirituality in the World's Religions by Wayne Teasdale >From Amazon.com: "Author Wayne Teasdale believes that we're entering the 'Interspiritual Age,' when a new civilization will be formed--a global culture based on common spiritual values. 'Such a universal society will draw its inspiration from perennial spiritual and moral insights, intuitions, and experiences,' Teasdale predicts. "Throughout this ambitious book, Teasdale examines the world's religions and highlights the underlying beliefs and yearnings that will ultimately link humankind. "Nonetheless, Teasdale is also a proponent of spiritual diversity, urging readers to protect and study their own indigenous religions (or in many cases the religions of their childhoods) before rejecting them. In his glowing introduction, the Dalai Lama also speaks to the importance of preserving religions while simultaneously joining forces to create a more spiritually evolved and compassionate planet. "In his final chapters, Teasdale offers ideas for cultivating a more spiritual life. Although his suggestions aren't startlingly original ('Gravitate toward silence,' 'Always leave the door of hope wide open.') they are tried and true and well worth the reader's time and investment." Apr 12 - This is My God by Herman Wouk The group meets on the third floor of Book People. The Downtown Corner Austin City Council Member Sheryl Cole organized a community meeting of churches and congregations from across the city on Friday, January 15, to talk about homeless ministries in hopes of building a broader coalition of churches and non-profits as the City moves forward in the planning for more homeless services. Since Ms. Cole had just returned from a trip to Miami, she briefed the group on the "Miami model" of integrated homeless services and their success in reducing the number of people on the streets. She is scheduled to visit Portland, Oregon, this spring to look at that city's approach to addressing the challenges of homelessness. Susan Morris of the Cluster gave a brief overview of the history of the Cluster, our mission, past, current and future Cluster projects and our advocacy component. Other representatives talked about their own homeless ministries and programs. And in this discussion, it was learned that the South Austin Cluster still exists! It is now the South Austin Assistance Ministries and operates out of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Some of the suggestions from the group of ministers, pastors, preachers and other faith-based representatives included keeping a common depository of information, helping the Jennifer Gale Village take root, fulfilling a 1997 RUDAT recommendation of a downtown detox center and participa- tion in the fate of the remaining GO bond money. Council Member Cole asked Susan Morris to help continue to organize the faith community as the City moves towards finding solutions to reducing the number of homeless people on our streets, whether building a campus similar to Haven for Hope in San Antonio or adding to existing services. Ms. Cole is still interested in hosting a faith-based community trip to Haven for Hope in the near future. More details to follow. CPC is a member of the Downtown Cluster of Congregations and Social Service Agencies. I love the night Before the sun shines And all through the house I know you are mine. Whether it rains or snows The Man upstairs knows That night is the time That's truly divine. I love the house When all are asleep I can dream to myself With nothing to beat. It's solemn it's wise It's like cinnamon spice. All that has might Is held in the night. A Mo-Ranch Weekend Retreat April 23-25 Achieving Authenticity - A Look at Healthy Relationships with God, Ourselves and Others [Note: Co-leader of this retreat is Central's own Lindsey Irons, a Licensed Professional Counselor.] God created us to be relational beings and to live in community with others. However, relationships are often unhealthy, unsafe, or unsatisfying. Healthy relationships are cultivated from healthy individuals. Individual health begins with understanding the need for boundaries; how to manage our own emotions; and developing good communication skills. None of us is born with the ability to do these things. Instead, we learn how to be in relationship by watching the relationships around us. Sometimes we see healthy ones, but often we witness unhealthy communication and mixed messages about how to handle our emotions which can take a toll on the relationships closest to us. As adults, we bring what we learned and how we feel about ourselves into the relationships we have with others. This weekend will focus on understanding how our childhood and family interactions affect us now, discovering what boundaries are and why God calls us to take care of ourselves, and learning how to manage our feelings. Join our exploration of how we can grow into relationships around us while God nurtures our souls en route.
